The Best Spray Tar for Roofs
Testing Method
To test the sprays, we used each product on a roof in our lab. We chose three roofing materials from the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) roofing test data: asphalt shingles, modified bitumen, and fiberglass shingles. We also chose two types of granules: One was made of coal tar and an aggregate; the other was made of fiberglass and an aggregate. We mixed the granules with different paints and sprays, as instructed by the manufacturers.
For each product, we applied it to a section of roofing material, allowed it to dry completely (as instructed), then set a propane heater to 107°F and placed it three feet away from the test material. We left the products on the roof for four hours to see how well they resisted heat degradation. We also tracked how easy the products were to apply, how well they covered the surface without leaving bald spots, and how well they covered a wider area than their suggested application range.
We then looked at how easy the products were to clean up, and how well they adhered to the shingles.
Afterward, we cut each piece of roofing material into an 18-inch-by-18-inch panel and used an impact sprinkler to soak the panel for 10 minutes, again noting how easy each product was to clean up.
Finally, we used a 3M spray adhesive remover to see how difficult it was to remove each product from our skin.
