Our Methodology for Testing
First, we took each stroller out for a few weeks in various conditions. Second, we measured the strollers with a tape measure and took note of how easy they were to set up. Third, we took each stroller and its rain cover out in a variety of weather conditions and kept track of how easy it was to put the cover on and take it off, how well the cover fit over the stroller, and how well the cover stayed in place during a storm.
For this first round of testing, we also enlisted the help of our colleagues at The Wirecutter.
We also looked at the strollers’ design features, including how easy they were to fold and unfold, as well as how easy they were to steer.
We took notes on how difficult it was to install the strollers in the car, and then we did the same with the infant car seats.
In addition to testing each stroller with the infant seat that came with it, we also paired each stroller with an infant seat from our infant car seat comparison guide. This gave us an even better idea of how easy each stroller was to use and maneuver with a baby in tow.
We took note of any complaints we had about each stroller as well as any comments about them online.
We also looked at any safety notes that came with the strollers.
Finally, we checked for recalls for each model.
Bemece Stroller Rain Cover
Product Review
The Bemece Universal Stroller Rain Cover is an inexpensive but well-made product. It’s made of a thin but sturdy EVA film, so it’s soft to the touch and will never tear.
It’s also free of toxins and environmentally friendly. The material is smooth and soft to touch, and the large, see-through window lets you lift your baby in and out of the stroller without fumbling with the zipper.
It’s also made with multiple ventilation holes and comes with two straps to keep the rain cover fixed on the stroller. The only downside is that it’s a little larger than most competitors, so it might not fit on compact strollers.
Bemece Universal Stroller Accessory – Waterproof Windproof Travel Weather Shield
Product Review
The Bemece Stroller Rain Cover is the most straightforward choice in this category. Made of a clear, food-grade EVA film, it has the soft touch of cloth but is waterproof and easy to install.
It is one of the only covers that is large enough to cover a standard-size stroller while also fitting over a car seat, jogger, and baby carrier. And because it’s flexible, it’s easy to fold up and pack away in a purse or diaper bag.
Unlike the other covers in this group, which are flat, it has the unique design of a curved front panel, which helps the cover fit better over a rounded stroller body. The Bemece cover has a smooth, seamless design that prevents rain from seeping in and accumulating, and it has a Velcro strap on the front to secure the cover to the stroller.
This design also helps prevent wind from lifting the cover and securing it in place, so parents no longer have to worry about water leaking or the cover flapping in the wind. The Bemece is also one of the more visually clear rain covers that we tested, since it’s made of a transparent film, and special materials make it less likely to wrinkle.
It is also one of the more airy covers we tested, since it has mesh vents on both sides and a lid that rolls up to allow air to circulate more easily. When the fresh air circulates, it’ll reduce the discomfort and provide a relaxed and comfortable environment for the baby.
Stroller Rain Cover
Product Review
The HUGSUN Universal Stroller Rain Cover is made of high-quality materials, and it’s easy to install. The clear plastic material is smooth and soft to touch, and it’s also breathable and waterproof.
The HUGSUN Universal Stroller Rain Cover has a zipper to stop rain from seeping in, and velcro straps to keep the rain cover fixed on the stroller. There are air holes on both sides of the rain cover, mesh ventilation holes on both sides of the product make the air easier to circulate.
In the sultry weather, this design can effectively reduce the difficulty of breathing in the stroller. In light rain, the lid can be rolled up and fully ventilated. A baby can breathe fresh air in the rain cover as well. The HUGSUN Universal Stroller Rain Cover can protect baby from rain, wind, snow, cold and dust.
With the see-through large window it is great for baby lift in and out of stroller, and also show perfect vision. The HUGSUN Universal Stroller Rain Cover is quick to install and remove, and it fits most standard-sized single baby strollers, jogging strollers, and prams.
It’s large and flexible, which makes it easy to roll up and pack—and we think it’s just as effective as the more expensive options. We think the HUGSUN Universal Stroller Rain Cover is a great choice for parents who want to keep their stroller in the trunk of their car.
If you’re interested in an umbrella-type stroller, we’d recommend our runner-up pick, the Munchkin Stroller Guard, instead. If you’d prefer an all-plastic option (and you don’t need a stroller cover that packs down small), we think the Moxnly Stroller Cover is a great choice.
Rain Cover for Double Stroller
Product Review
If you want a rain cover that will fit a side-by-side double stroller and more than two kids, we recommend the Joovy Slooshy It II Universal. The Slooshy II is a generous-size universal cover that should accommodate most double strollers.
It fits both single and side-by-side strollers, and it’s big enough to cover two kids. Two waterproof storage bags on the back of the cover can hold your keys and phone.
The large window with a waterproof zipper allows you to quickly open and close the cover. The cover comes with a thick shoulder strap to make carrying the cover around an outdoor event easier than using the traditional elastic straps, which can be hard on your shoulder.
The Slooshy II is made from an eco-friendly material that should last for years without fraying or tearing, and the design is simple but attractive.
Stroller Rain Cover
Product Review
The Stroller Rain Cover has a truly universal design, covering the stroller from top to bottom for maximum weather protection. The large entry lets you easily get your baby in and out of their seat, and the two adjacent convenience pockets in the rear provide a place to store small items.
The Strolly also includes a portable pouch for storing the cover when it’s not in use. The Stroller Rain Cover is our top pick because it’s the only one that truly and completely covers all sides of most strollers.
Wind, sleet, and snow simply cannot get through the Strolly’s thick, clear, and see-through material, and it offers ample protection for your baby. The Strolly’s large eye-protective flat surface optical windows in three sides protect your baby from UV rays and provide clear-eyed vision without any optical distortions.
Two ventilation system on the sides and the heat can be released through the large holes of the top panel. And—unlike with other stroller covers we tested—the Strolly is actually big enough to cover a standard double stroller.
It is also easy to install and remove. You can pull it on stroller and fasten hook. The Stroller Rain Cover is a little more expensive than the competition, but we think it’s well worth the extra money, since it will last through multiple kids and multiple strollers.
Don’t Buy Before Considering These Factors
We considered all types of rain covers, and we read through online reviews to determine which models seemed to be most popular. We finally decided to test the following types:
Umbrella-Style Covers
These thin, stretchy covers have a ring on top that attaches to the stroller’s handlebar. These are our top pick because they’re super simple to put on and take off, even with one hand. They also give you the most visibility when you’re pushing your kid.
Poncho-Style Covers
These covers look like ponchos that you put over your child while they sit in their stroller. They tend to be slightly less convenient than umbrella-style covers—to put them on, you usually have to detach the seat from the stroller—but they provide better coverage overall.
Cover-All Covers
This type of cover consists of an elastic skirt with two flaps that drape down over a backrest.
Are Winter Stroller Covers Suitable for Use as Rain Covers?
While winter stroller covers can be used as rain covers, there are some important differences between the two types of covers.
To start with, winter stroller covers are typically much thicker and better insulated than rain covers, which means that they are better suited for protecting your child from cold wind and rain during the winter months.
If you are wondering whether stroller covers for winter are suitable for use as rain covers, then it is important to consider your individual needs and preferences when making your decision.
